Review: ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA Crashes And Burns In Oakland

Jim Harrington of InsideBayArea.com reviewed ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA's headlining performance at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, California Thursday night (February 22). An excerpt from his review follows:

"The reality for ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA ever since the TV show ended in September, has been pretty harsh. Setting the tone was the band's self-titled debut, which after its November release failed to even break into the Top 100 of the Billboard album chart and has since completely faded from view.

"The latest slap in the face for the group came during the Oakland date, which drew one of the smallest crowds I've ever seen during 25 years of visiting the arena. Only a couple of thousand fans, at best, turned out to a venue that can hold well over 15,000. In other words, this show should have been held at the Warfield or some other small theater.

"That weak turnout had to be a real ego deflator for two of the group's members — [Tommy] Lee and [Gilby] Clarke, both of whom are used to playing before packed arenas and, even, stadiums. And it would have been similarly hard on [Jason] Newsted, except that the Walnut Creek bassist wasn't onstage to see all the empty seats.

"Newsted had to bow out of the entire tour after suffering injuries to his left shoulder and right arm while trying to catch a falling bass amp late last year. Taking his place is Johnny Colt of the BLACK CROWES.

"While it would have been nice to see Newsted perform, the former METALLICA man really couldn't have helped matters much. That's because this show was as big of an artistic train wreck as it was a commercial one.

The greatest problem was the man who was picked to lead SUPERNOVA — Lukas Rossi, who was a cook at a Hooters restaurant prior to competing on the TV show. While he might have done a whiz-bang job on buffalo wings, the Canadian singer makes for a horrible front man for a band."
